Margham - A case study on the peri-urbanity of Dubai
ARC474_F19 RESEARCH PROJECT / STUDENTS: RACHEL GEORGE, SAMRAKSHANA SURESH
Farmlands in the UAE challenge the very notion of desert by existing as successful models of human settlement among the dominance of the hyper-arid landscape.
The practice of “Desert Farming’’ incorporates a juxtaposition of two extreme conditions of natural landscape. The farmland development, owing to its adjacency to the city, is a pre-dominant Peri-urban condition. Each farmland development is supported by a number of functions and residential areas in close proximity which makes it a self-sufficient model, independent from the city. While emerging as the ‘’otherness’’ to the city, the farmland expansion is one that is viable compares to the city’s rapid urban growth that is economically and sustainably not feasible. Therefore, the Peri-urban condition of farmlands provides a promising new antagonist to the existing urban fabric.
